Breast Revision Q&A
What is the goal of breast revision surgery?
Breast revision surgery replaces old breast implants with newer versions. The procedure updates the material used in your existing implants and corrects any complaints you have about your previous surgery. During breast revision, you may undergo:
- Breast lift or breast reduction in addition to the change in your implants
- Repositioning of your implants on the chest
- New implants that are either smaller or larger than your current implant
- Remove implants with or without a lift
During breast revision, Dr. Li can also replace your existing implants with ones that are a different shape or style.
Who is a candidate for breast revision surgery?
You may choose breast revision surgery for aesthetic or physical reasons. These include:
- A desire for a different breast size
- Pain from capsular contracture
- Change in the type (silicone or saline) of implant or in its style
- Concern about implant rupture or migration
Breast implants aren’t made to last forever. They can move, change in shape or size, and lose their natural feel.
What happens during breast revision surgery?
Breast revision is customized to your concerns and aesthetic goals. Dr. Li listens carefully to what you hope to achieve with revision surgery and then develops a surgical plan to address all of these issues at the time of your procedure.
Prior to your surgery, Dr. Li reviews your surgical goals, any medical conditions, medicines you’re taking, and prior surgeries. She’ll also evaluate your overall health status, examine your existing implants, take photographs, and help you understand what you can expect from your results.
During surgery, you’ll likely be placed under general anesthesia. Dr. Li accesses your implants through one of several approaches. Often an incision is made in the crease under the breast or around the areola. You’ll discuss which one she’ll use prior to your surgery.
Following surgery, the team ensures your vitals are stable before releasing you to recover at home. You’ll be given comprehensive after-care instructions that may include the use of a compression garment to reduce swelling. Dr. Li will let you know when it’s okay to start to return to normal activities but know that full recovery can take up to eight weeks.
